Mekhela Chador (also spelt Mekhela Chadar, Mekhela Sador, or Mekhla Chadar) iscomprising two pieces of cloth draped on the top and bottom, which is the traditional attire worn by women in Assam. The bottom half of this distinct dress is called the ‘Mekhela’, a round fit used waist downwards over a petticoat.
A traditional, hand woven garment of Assam, the mekhela chador is a handwoven, two-piece attire worn by the women from the region.
Mekhela Chadors are fabricated from Muga Silk, Pat Silk, Eri Silk or Cotton.
The silk Mekhela Chador, a traditional dress of Assamese women in India, has retained its popularity amidst changing fashion trends, since it came to prominence due to the association of the kings during the Ahom rule from 13th to 19th century.

How is Mekhla worn?

Draping. The bottom portion, draped from the waist downwards, is called the mekhela.It is a wide cylindrical piece cloth that is folded into one or two pleats to fit around the waist and tucked in.

Care Guide – Mekhela Sador

1. Never hand-wash or machine-wash a silk mekhela sador.
2. It is advisable to only dry-clean silk mekhela sadors.
3. Never hang a silk mekhela sador to dry in direct sunlight as doing so will cause the color to fade.
4. Don’t keep the mekhela sador bundled up as this will result in the threads of the embroidery work getting entangled.
5. Don’t store the mekhela sador in a plastic cover as this will cause the gold embroidery to turn black.
6. In case the mekhela sador gets stained, immediately wipe the stain off with cold water.
